Plant Insights and Care
Propagation Type: Seedling (grown from seed).
Monstera deliciosa is a climbing tropical aroid grown for split leaves and, on mature plants, an edible compound fruit.
- Sun Exposure: Bright filtered light suits foliage growth. Intense exposed sun can scorch leaves, particularly during summer.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the upper growing medium begins to dry. Keep drainage open and avoid prolonged saturation.
- Soil: Use an airy organic mix with drainage. Give aerial roots a suitable support or access to the growing medium.
- Temperature and Humidity: Warm, humid conditions favour growth. In 40–45°C weather, protect from exposed sun and drying wind; an air-conditioned indoor location may be easier for foliage care.
- Fertilization: Feed moderately during active growth and reduce feeding when growth slows.
- Pruning: Guide the climbing stem onto a strong support. Prune to limit spread and remove damaged leaves, keeping sap away from skin and eyes.
- Growth Rate and Size: A vigorous, potentially very large vine. Mature leaves and stems need more space than the nursery plant suggests.
- Pollination: Flowering and fruiting require maturity and suitable conditions. Typical indoor foliage culture does not guarantee fruit.
Key Points
- Unripe fruit and other plant parts can irritate the mouth.
- Give the vine a strong support and control its spread.
Fruit Profile
The elongated green fruit ripens progressively as its surface scales lift away naturally. Eat only the exposed, fully ripe soft flesh; do not force scales off or eat firm unripe sections. Ripe flesh is aromatic, while unripe tissue contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals.
