Plant Insights and Care

Orange ‘Dekopon’ (Citrus × shiranui) is a premium Japanese citrus variety created by crossing Kiyomi and Ponkan. Known for its exceptional sweetness, large fruit size, and distinctive “top-knot” at the stem end, it’s one of the most famous high-end oranges worldwide.

The tree grows medium-sized with a rounded canopy and performs well in warm, sunny climates. It prefers well-draining, fertile loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). While it thrives in heat, it benefits from mulching to protect its shallow roots and retain soil moisture, particularly in arid environments like the UAE. Consistent watering during flowering and fruiting is key to producing juicy, well-formed fruit.

Dekopon is grafted onto vigorous citrus rootstocks for better yield and soil adaptability. Fertilize with a citrus-specific fertilizer that includes nitrogen, potassium, and trace minerals, with increased potassium during fruit development to enhance sweetness and color. Pruning should be minimal—mainly to open the canopy for light and airflow.

Key Points:

  • Origin: Japan (developed in the 1970s).

  • Climate: Warm subtropical to tropical; thrives in sunny, well-watered conditions.

  • Sun Exposure: Full sun.

  • Watering: Deep, consistent watering during fruiting; avoid waterlogging.

  • Soil: Fertile, well-draining loam; pH 6.0–7.0.

  • Fertilization: Balanced citrus feed; increase potassium during fruiting.

  • Pruning: Light annual pruning to shape and promote airflow.

  • Growth Rate: Moderate; fruiting typically begins 2–3 years after planting

Fruit Profile

The Dekopon fruit is large, often 8–10 cm in diameter, with a distinctive protruding bump at the stem end. The skin is bright orange, smooth, and easy to peel. The flesh inside is vibrant orange, seedless, and exceptionally sweet and juicy, with a balanced acidity that gives it a refreshing flavor.

Known for its high sugar content (up to 13–14° Brix) and low acidity, Dekopon oranges are among the sweetest citrus fruits in the world. The fruit is also valued for its long shelf life and excellent eating quality.

Dive into the facts:

  • Taste: Intensely sweet and juicy with very low acidity.

  • Appearance: Large orange fruit with a smooth peel and distinctive top “bump.”

  • Fun Fact: Dekopon is so prized in Japan that premium-grade fruits are individually wrapped and sold at high-end fruit boutiques—often gifted as luxury produce.
