How to enjoy this fruit
An oval fruit with a glossy red-to-purple shell. Inside is translucent white flesh around a single large seed, rather like a longan.
Remove the large seed before eating. A firm shell is normal and does not mean the fruit needs more ripening.
When it’s ready
Our matoa is picked and delivered ripe. There is no need to leave it out to soften. The red-to-purple shell protects the juicy flesh inside.
How to eat it
Crack the shell with gentle, firm pressure or make a shallow cut through the skin, then peel it away. Eat the translucent flesh and remove the seed. The flavour has a sweet lychee-and-longan character.
How to store it
Keep the whole, unpeeled fruit in the fridge and enjoy promptly. Refrigerate any peeled flesh in a covered container.
