Plant Insights and Care
Propagation Type: Split.
Shampoo Ginger (Zingiber zerumbet) is a rhizomatous perennial grown for leafy stems and cone-shaped flower heads.
- Sun Exposure: Use filtered light or partial shade, particularly where summer sun is intense.
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during leafy growth. If the plant dies back into dormancy, reduce watering and avoid keeping inactive rhizomes soggy.
- Soil: Use organic, freely draining soil that retains some moisture without becoming compacted.
- Temperature and Humidity: Warm, humid conditions suit active growth. Dry wind and exposed 40–45°C heat can scorch foliage, so provide shelter.
- Fertilization: Feed lightly during active growth; pause while dormant.
- Pruning: Remove fully dead stems and spent flower stalks. Do not cut healthy foliage simply because the flower cone has changed colour.
- Growth Rate and Size: Spreads by underground rhizomes into a leafy clump, commonly around human waist height under favourable conditions. Containers limit spread.
Key Points
- Seasonal dieback does not automatically mean the rhizome has died.
- An ornamental ginger, not ordinary culinary ginger.
Fruit Profile
The decorative cones are flower heads, not edible fruits. Green bracts become red as they mature and enclose small pale flowers. Liquid accumulates between the bracts; this explains the common name Shampoo Ginger, but it is not a prepared cosmetic product.
