Plant Insights and Care

Propagation Type: Air Layer (air-layered).

Water Apple ‘Green Giant’ is a green-fruited selection of Syzygium samarangense, also known as wax apple or wax jambu. This evergreen tree develops a spreading canopy and produces bell-shaped fruit with thin, glossy skin.

  • Sun Exposure: Give established trees good sunlight. Acclimatise nursery plants gradually and provide protection from harsh afternoon exposure while they establish.
  • Watering: Keep the root zone reliably moist, particularly during new growth, flowering and fruit development. This is not a drought-resistant tree. Check moisture below the surface and adjust irrigation to the weather, soil and container size rather than following a fixed schedule.
  • Soil: Fertile, moisture-retentive loam suits the tree. Improve sandy soil with well-decomposed organic matter, while maintaining drainage. Mulch around the root zone without piling material against the trunk.
  • Temperature and Humidity: A tropical species suited to warm conditions with dependable moisture. During 40–45°C weather, protect young plants from drying wind and severe afternoon exposure, and monitor the root zone closely. Heat survival does not guarantee flowering or fruit set.
  • Fertilization: Feed moderately as the tree grows, adjusting to its size and leaf condition. Established bearing trees can be fed after harvest and as flowering begins. Avoid concentrated fertilizer against the trunk or feeding a dry, stressed root ball.
  • Pruning: Shape young trees lightly to develop a balanced framework. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches and avoid repeated severe topping.
  • Growth Rate and Size: Growth occurs in flushes. The species can reach roughly 5–15 m in the ground, with a broad crown; garden trees need space and regular size management. Air layering preserves the parent selection, but fruiting time still depends on establishment and growing conditions.
  • Pollination: The species is reported to have self-compatible flowers. Encourage insect visits during flowering; a second tree is not a substitute for suitable growing conditions, and fruit set is not guaranteed in extreme heat.

Key Points

  • Reliable root-zone moisture is essential, especially in sandy soil.
  • Allow room for a spreading canopy and protect newly planted trees during severe summer weather.
  • Handle the thin-skinned fruit gently and harvest it while crisp.

Fruit Profile

‘Green Giant’ is supplied as a green-fruited selection. The bell-shaped fruit has glossy skin and pale, crisp flesh with a light, refreshing flavour. Sweetness, seed content and fruit size vary with the selection and growing conditions. Green-fruited wax apples do not need to turn red to be ready to eat; assess development and flavour rather than waiting for red skin or a soft texture. Wash well, remove any seeds and enjoy fresh or chilled. The delicate fruit is best eaten soon after harvest.
