Plant Insights and Care
Propagation Type: Seedling (grown from seed).
Wild Jackfruit (Artocarpus hirsutus), also called Anjili, is a large evergreen forest tree native to southwestern India.
- Sun Exposure: Give young plants bright shelter and gradually increase exposure. Established trees need space and good light.
- Watering: Maintain dependable moisture while establishing. Protect the root ball from rapid drying; do not leave container roots stagnant.
- Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil with organic matter and allow ample rooting space.
- Temperature and Humidity: A tropical forest species associated with moist conditions. Dry, exposed heat is a substantial growing challenge; protect young plants during 40–45°C weather.
- Fertilization: Feed young trees moderately during active growth, adjusting to foliage and soil condition.
- Pruning: Train a sound framework early. Remove damaged or crossing branches; do not rely on severe topping to make a forest tree permanently compact.
- Growth Rate and Size: Potentially a very large tree, unsuitable for a small permanent planting space. Container growth is not representative of mature landscape size.
- Pollination: Male and female inflorescences occur on the same tree. Successful local flowering and fruit set remain dependent on maturity and conditions.
Key Points
- Choose the planting position for its eventual tree size.
- A distinct species, not a small cultivar of ordinary jackfruit.
Fruit Profile
The relatively small, spiny compound fruits turn yellow to orange at maturity. Ripe edible flesh surrounds the seeds inside the rind. Remove the outer skin and separate the flesh; fruit quality varies between seed-grown trees.
